Since it’s that time of the year where having a runny nose, sore throat, and a stubborn fever is a story of every other household, I wanted to share my experience on this miracle Elderberry Syrup that has been doing wonders for my family for years!
Ever since I was a kid, my grandma had me pick all the elderberries from our garden, till the time I grew up. I remember eating these berries in various delicious forms, which is why I am able to take care of my family the way my grandma did.
Scientists often use terms like Sambucus nigra to refer to these juicy berries. These are widely grown in North America and Europe and have innumerable health benefits. The fun part about elderberries is that I can use it in any of my recipes, and so can you! You can grab a cup of elderberry tea, or treat yourself with an elderberry dessert. But today, I choose to tell you guys about the health benefits of elderberry syrup.
The elderberry syrup is known to have amazing medicinal properties that fight against several ailments. It has been found to prevent invasion by viruses and bacteria, and also improve cough. A study found that elderberry has the ability to inhibit H1N1 infection in vitro.
It is a syrupy form of the delicious berry, formulated using either black or blue elderberries. It contains amino and viburnic acids, tannin, rutin, sugar, flavonoids, carotenoids, organic pigments and large amounts of vitamin A, B and C, all of which will make this syrup a highly nutritious and therapeutic addition to your diet.
A variety of health benefits come with this syrup- some of which are:
Instant Relief for Cold and Flu
Black elderberry syrup can instantly cure prolonged bouts of cold or flu. It has antiviral agents that decrease mucus production thereby curing congestion and other respiratory problems. According to the University Of Maryland Medical Center, it increases perspiration and enables the body to get rid of infections. It magically reduces the severity and duration of the flu, and truly, I have witnessed a speedy-recovery myself, especially in the case of sinus infection.
Prevents Stomach Ulcers and Cancer
The syrup kills the bacterium that causes stomach ulcers according to a research conducted by University of Texas at El Paso. It is anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer. This is because it is believed to havenutrients and proteins that hinder the growthof cancerous cells.
Regulates Blood Sugar and Fat
Ursolic acid, a component in black elderberry, regulates blood sugar level and decreases fat storage. This helps in relieving both digestion and constipation. Add this syrup to your child’s diet, and he/she will sleep with a happy stomach!
Elderberry syrup effectively washes away all the toxins from your body. It decreases fat storage, and reduces belly fat to enable you to achieve your weight goal. I recently achieved mine! This is because of the active anti-oxidants found in elderberry.
Boosts the Immune System
It enhances the body’s immune system as it contains anthocyanins, and unique proteins which help the antibodies fight against diabetes, and other health problems. According to a research conducted by Austria’s University of Graz, elderberry mitigates oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which may otherwise cause cardiovascular diseases. This makes the elderberry syrup great for heart health as well. This is probably the reason my family history is clear of heart problems.
It contains large amounts of vitamin A and other nutrients, which help improve eyesight.
Elderberry syrup contains lycopene. This is an important element for bone health and helps develop bone strengthen.
Improves Liver Health
Elderberry syrup cleans the liver, and stops all sorts of liver diseases for manifesting themselves. You will not have to worry about a fatty liver anymore because elderberry takes good care of the toxins circulating in your body.
