You may have heard about the new trend in the nutrition world claiming that certain foods are now ‘super’. Super foods are a naturally superior group of foods. In order to be considered a super food, they must be nutrient dense, yet low in calories.
Also, they all have a high concentration and variety of:
- Healthy fats
- Quality protein
Their benefits range from increasing energy levels and helping the body fight disease to assisting with weight loss, growth, and repair!
Although dieticians and nutritional experts have yet to release a specific definition for ‘super foods’ (and don’t generally use the term to describe a particular food group), the term has become quite widespread in the marketing world and is popular on menus and in health food stores.
Super foods come in a range of forms. Some include:
Green Superfoods (such as Kale, Spinach, Wheatgrass, Spirulina)
These foods have the highest concentrations of bioavailable vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and healthy bacteria. They help to protect against disease, build immunity, improve digestive health, and build lean muscle.
These are especially high in antioxidants which protect the body from free radicals and oxidative stress. In turn, they help to prevent disease and cellular damage.
Herb Superfoods (such as Nettle, Echinacea, Ginseng, Aloe vera)
Herbs provide the body with essential nutrients that it can’t otherwise produce itself. These superfoods are great supplements for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. Each herb has a different function, but they work in conjunction to rebalance and regulate the body. Some of my favorite brands are as follows:
